Community Centre

Story Title: Community Centre
Episode 9: WA's Great Gardens
Date: 5 December 2010
Presenter:
 Trevor Cochrane

The Willagee Community Centre was established in 2008 through a minor grant of $200. The garden, with the help of this minor grant and donations from the local community, has grown to what we see today.

Our aim for the garden is too see the space as an extension of our centre, where the community can share by either volunteering in the garden, sitting and relaxing, or using the vegetables and herbs we grow.

This makeover has helped us move towards this aim of sustainable community garden. The benefits will enhance the community centre as central hub for the suburb of Willagee and furthermore the South West neighbourhood in the City of Melville.

The Willagee Community Centre is becoming the heart of the community. A community hub promoting a sense of belonging and community spirit. The centre connects the community through vibrant, inclusive community based activities.

Willagee Community Centre provides for volunteer involvement, for mutual support and sharing of skills and resources, for celebrations and special events – a meeting place for local residents and groups to come together informally in a relaxed welcoming environment, and is the home of 'Willagee Alive' our local resident group.

The centre is the base for the Neighbourhood Development team for the west neighbourhood in the City of Melville. The centre hosts a Community Development Coordinator, Neighbourhood Development Officer, Aboriginal Liaison Officer, Financial Counselor, Youth Engagement Officer, Administration Staff and a Child Health Nurse. The centre staff meets regularly with Department of Housing, Local Police and Department of Child Protection to share information about Willagee, identifying opportunities and challenges in the community.
