Tips and Facts
- Raspberries are a rich source of anti-oxidants, vitamin C and minerals.
- Being rich in antioxidants, raspberries helps neutralise free radicals in the body and can, prevent damage to cell membranes and other structures.
- Raspberries leaves can be used for medicinal purposes, including herbal teas to regulate menstrual cycles.
- The way raspberries are grown is very important to ensure continuous production.
- Raspberries are a thorny berry and growing them in a large barrel is a great way to contain them if you have a limited area.
- If you have some room in the garden plant them out in raised beds. The beds should be set up in a way where you can keep tying the canes back to guide wires. This technique allows for easy control of the runners
- Berries are cooler climate plants but they do very well in Perth.
- You can produce up to five kilograms per summer saving you a total of 200 dollars.
- Other vines you can grow this time of year are passion fruit, they are delicious and the best varieties are the grafted forms like the famous Nelly Kellie Passionfruit
- Passion fruit can be grown against a wall, a fence or even up a pergola or arbor. Make sure you use a sturdy frame for best results.
- Varieties such as, black passionfruit, panama gold passionfruit or panama red passionfruit can produce up to 400 fruits per season per plant which can be over 100 kilos.
- It's critical to add a soil that holds heaps of water and never lets the plant dry out. You can't beat coco-peat for that purpose. You buy it in blocks which quickly swell to around 60 litres per block and it makes the best potting mix for water hungry plants.
