Winter Lawn Maintenance
Story Title: Winter Lawn Maintenance
Episode 3: WA's Great Gardens
Date: 30th May 2010
Presenter: Neville Passmore
Neville features the perfect lawn regime for beautiful green grass colour come this Spring.
- Palmetto is a beautiful, emerald green, soft leaf buffalo that is a very easy care lawn. It is a waterwise variety that will handle sun or shade and is well suited to Perth's climate.
- With the right treatment now, Palmetto will stay green and healthy through the cold winter. It is very important, whatever the lawn variety, to get it looking good now before the growth slows down or stops.
- Mow the lawn higher. You only need to remove a little of the leaf and no more than one third the lengths. This will reduce stress due to the cold and will reduce weeds from popping up over winter.
- Reduce the mowing frequency from fortnightly to 3 or 4 week intervals and only remove a little. Keep mowing over winter to help remove any weed seed heads that might pop up.
- It's very important to fertilise now using a premium slow release fertiliser, such as Palmetto lawn fertiliser specifically made for WA conditions and soils. A good time to do this is with the first rains so it gets good penetration.
- Turn the sprinklers off. No need to water this time of year as rain should be enough.
