Rossmoyne Primary School
- Rossmoyne have now had their Aquaponics system for 6 months and are enjoying the benefits of growing fresh veggies and fish.
- Aquaponics is a system for providing fresh fish and veggies and salads to the dinner table in a completely natural way that delivers the best quality food in a way that is chemical free and you know where your food is coming from.
- We think this type of system is a very important tool for school children as it deals with a natural food production system and brings them an understanding of how nature really works.
- To explain – the system works when fish waste or poo as the kids love to call it is drawn up through the circulating pump and fed into a bed filled with expanded clay. This bed is home to any number of edible plants which quickly suck up the nutrient filtering the water so it's clean.
- The water then passes back to the fish that need pure clean water free of high levels of nitrates which are potentially poisonous if left to build up. This system is not just incredibly productive it is also water efficient with very little water lost and the majority of that is only used by the plants anyway.
- If you're interested in establishing your own hydroponic or even better aquaponic system, talk to the people at Hydroponic express, they know the systems inside out and can help you get started.
