Winter Herbs

Story Title: Winter Herbs
Episode 1: WA's Great Gardens
Date: 16th May 2010
Presenter: Neville Passmore

As winter approaches gardeners are getting twitchy because they know it's the time to get planting. There's a whole raft of herbs and edible flowers in the garden centre now which are crying out to be planted.

Neville's top winter herbs

  • Plant a selection of herbs in pots with edible flowers to liven up your winter gardens and all the flowers can be used in salads or as a garnish adding colour you can eat.
  • Winning combination: Kale (a cabbage family super food) with celery leaf with leaves that taste more like celery than the original and thyme as a ground cover.
  • In between the original marigold or Mary's Gold as it was originally known. The calendula petals look great in a mesculin salad mix. Just break up the flowers.
  • Mediterranean herbs oregano and thyme with edible pansy and viola. Once again a rainbow of colour and all can find their way into the kitchen.
