Story Title: Fragrant must have shrubs
Episode: Seven
Date: April 17th 2010.
Presenter: Brooke Stanway
Brooke gives us a few ideas for some gorgeous less common fragrant shrubs that are a must have in any garden.
Brooke's tips:
-
Creating a scented garden is simple, you can create a garden bed specifically as a perfumed bed or intersperse perfumed plants throughout your existing garden.
-
If you are after a perfumed garden year round, plant shrubs that flower through each season or choose plants with scented foliage.
-
There are some beautifully perfumed flowers through autumn such as Heliotrope Cherry pie, the double flowering forms of Dianthus, ornamental gingers and chocolate cosmos (Cosmos astrosanguinea), just to name a few.
-
For some winter fragrance try the Parma violets, they come in double mauve and white.
-
For plants with beautifully perfumed foliage, try the Scented pelargonium's. They come in a range of scents such as Peppermint, lemon, rose, orange, lime, coconut, apple, old spice and more.
-
Other scented foliages worth trying are the passion fruit marigold (tagetes limmonii) or herbs such as the mints, sages, lemon and lime verbena.
-
With a few plants from the suggestions above, you are sure to have a fragrant garden year round.
A special thanks to Tavistock Wholesale Nursery for supplying most of the shrubs seen this episode.
