Story Title: Our Water Solution
Episode: Three
Date: October 18th 2009
Presenter: Neville Passmore

We’ve enjoyed good rain through early spring which has been of great value to our gardens and to dam levels but for any gardener that is becoming complacent about water use the story is that one good season doesn’t change the new reality. Water will become more precious as we go forward.

About Western Australia’s Water

  • Groundwater levels have gradually fallen in large parts in Perth, so CSIRO and The Water Corporation are investigating ways of increasing lake levels.
  • The project will see a series of underground trenches placed near the lakes and filled with highly treated wastewater to infiltrate the soil to the groundwater.
  • Wastewater is the spent or used water from a community.
  • Treated wastewater has been used to irrigate country parks and ovals in Western Australia for over 50 years without significant health or environmental issues being reported.
  • Perry Lakes is one of the most studied wetland systems on the Swan Coastal Plain.
  • Groundwater Management project ensures environmental benefits for plants and animals that rely on groundwater to survive, like long-necked tortoises waterfowl and frogs will have access to more water.
  • People using the lake for recreation or other activities will be able to enjoy the lakes again once restored.
