Episode: Two
Date: October 11th 2009
Presenter: Neville Passmore

Neville reveals all you ever wanted to know about growing avocadoes including varieties, soils diseases and frost problems. Also learn how to use them in the kitchen, and how to test for ripeness.

Featured Fruit: Avocado

  • Contrary to common belief there is absolutely no cholesterol in avocado and only healthy omega oils so you can eat them to your hearts content and maintain good health.

  • Even though they are tropical, avocadoes grow well in Perth gardens…. once you understand what they need.

Planting

  • One of their most critical elements is planting. Timing is important as the fruit are vulnerable to cold and frost when young. So spring is ideal.

  • Carefully remove the grafted tree from its pot so its roots aren’t damaged and plant out into rich organic enhanced soil in a sunny spot. Don’t allow the new trees to become stressed through lack of moisture.

  • Young trees can’t handle full sun, frost or strong winds; so set up a climate shelter or “hoochi” with shade cloths.

  • While commercial orchardists plant cross fertilising varieties to maximise yields, home gardeners can usually get a successful crop from one tree, particularly if you choose Hass, Fuerte or Sharwill varieties.

Tip: How to check for ripeness

Cup the fruit in your hand and gently squeeze. If it is as soft as your cheek then it’s over ripe. If it’s as hard as your forehead it’s not yet ripe. However if the fruit gives, just like when you press the end of your nose, then it’s perfect.
