Establishing a smart garden is a challenge if you are not sure what to do. Trevor shares some tips on how to get started with a visit to a ‘Waterwise Display Village,’ featuring contemporary designs that can be both waterwise and attractive.
Settler’s Hill is a Stockland estate and WA’s largest master planned community with over 3500 residents.
In this village you will find Perth’s leading residential builders all in one location offering a wide range of choice in home and garden design.
A visit to this village will educate you and show you how you can have the most water efficient garden and home, and it’s all been developed with the advice and guidance of the Water Corporation.
The different display homes offer a great variety of design, plant selection and style.
A typical home in a Waterwise Display Village will feature;

Taps and showers, rated at 3 Star water rating or better.

Appliances on display rated at 4 Star water rating or better.

Water heating source positioned within five metres from the laundry (if a solar heater installed this may vary).

Garden design will be waterwise and include a balanced mix of hard stand, garden beds and lawn.

Soil is improved with a soil conditioner certified to Australian Standard AS4454 to a minimum depth of 150 mm where lawn is planted and minimum depth of 300 mm for garden beds.

These designs have been carefully installed with all sub-surface irrigation, allowing no room for evaporation while delivering the water straight to the root system.
