Six top tips to save water in your garden:

  • Mulch your garden beds –Mulch can reduce evaporation from soil by up to 70%. Mulch is like a blanket on the soil, keeping it cool, and protecting it from drying air and winds.

  • Rain water tanks - Tanks are easy to use and are now available in many styles to suit every home. Rain water tanks can also provide you with free water all year round and are not affected by water restrictions.

  • Grey Water - Simply place a bucket in the shower while you are waiting for the water to heat up, and this can be used later on your garden. (Grey water may contain some bacteria, detergents, cleaning agents and waste material so isn’t always suitable for garden uses.)

  • Pot plants – Outdoor plants in pots use a lot more water than plants in the ground. If you need to minimise your water use in the garden, one solution is to minimise pot plants.

  • Selecting drought tolerant plants for your garden. - There are many drought friendly plants available to suit your style of garden. Simply talk to your local nursery about purchasing sustainable plants for your area.

  • Visit www.savewater.com.au - There are loads of things you can do to reduce your water consumption in the garden, there is also an extensive product library which can provide you with information on water saving products.
