“Save 6 Campaign”
Being waterwise Outside Inside
-
The Water Corporation of Western Australia have launched a 50-year ‘Water Forever’ plan and the plan identifies that every household in WA needs to find ways to save an additional 6 standard buckets of water per day. You will hear a lot more about the save 6 campaign soon. That is only 60 Litres of water and if we all do our bit we can save a third of Mundaring Weir in one summer.
What you can do to save water
-
One of the simplest things you can do to conserve water outside the home is reduce your sprinkler time. The average household uses 3 buckets of water per minute. If we all set each station to run for 2 minutes less, we can save up to 24 buckets every watering session. Your garden will get enough water and still look beautiful.
-
Mulching is one of the most beneficial practices you can use in the garden. Thick layers of mulch can reduce evaporation by 70% and bucket loads of water a day. Just remember to apply at least 50mm thick.
-
When choosing a new lawn make sure its water efficient, warm season grasses such as Couch, Buffalo, Zoysia Grass or Kikuyu.
-
When you wash your car use a bucket. A running hose can waste up to 2 buckets of water per minute. If you use a bucket, you could save 4752 liters over a year. That’s around 528 buckets.
-
Pressure washing your driveway and paved areas can waste a lot of water, so why not try a broom or even better blower vacuum; you will again literally save bucket loads.
