Story: Indoor Winter Pot Planting
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Forget bleak winters as Trevor adds a touch of colour to a cloudy day. Find out just how easy it is to create and care for a magnificent indoor garden, when he shows off the top indoor plants and how to successfully plant these in stylish pots.
What to do:
- The best potting mix to use is a premium potting mix, which has controlled release fertilizer and water storage crystals in it.
- Ensure that you buy the mix with the red ticks on their bag.
- It is very important to water your plants in well, so that the mix comes into close contact with the root system of the plant.
- Always remember to grab some saucers to place under the pots when they are positioned inside. This will capture any excess water.
- Don?t over-water your plants; it is important to let them dry out once in a while. To determine though if they are too dry, stick your finger in the top of the pot and if the soil is dry, it is time to give your plants a water.
- Generally, indoor plants require one watering a week during winter, and twice a week during summer.
Featured Plants
Weeping Fig
- This plant is native to Australia and is world famous for its durability indoors.
- It is a foliage feature plant that also has the ability to remove air pollutants produced by adhesives and aerosols.
Red edged Dragon Tree
- This makes a fantastic indoor plant, being almost unkillable.
- Many years ago, research was conducted on plants that clean the air, and they found that this plant was one of the very best.
Dumb Cane
- This plant grows commonly in waterways around Africa. In the past, slave traders would cut the cane and make the slaves chew on it. This would cause their mouths and tongues to swell up, so that they couldn?t communicate with one another.
- Despite this terrible past, it makes a spectacular indoor plant.
