The Cottage Garden

Episode: WA Special
Date: 24th January
Story: The Cottage Garden

Presenter: Deryn Thorpe

One of the most suitable style gardens for WA?s Mediterranean climate is the cottage garden. Cottage gardens aim to look natural and provide a relaxed and romantic ambience. Deryn Thorpe invites us to her home to take a look at a mix of waterwise plants that provide interesting foliage and flowers all year round.
Mulching is essential to keep the garden looking good in the warmer months and Deryn reveals the secrets of her favorite mulch and the endless benefits it can provide to the garden.

Deryn recommends;

  • Use a mulch with big particles to allow water to flow through
  • Mulches with small particles can create a barrier to the moisture
  • Be generous when applying mulch, up to 5 cm of thickness to garden beds
  • Use an organic mulch as they break down over time and feed plants
  • They also reduce water evaporation and protect roots from sun.
