Featured Waste Treatment Facility

Cairns Bedminster Composting Plant

  • New waste and recycling technology is making Far North Queensland a greener and more environmentally friendly place to live and work.
  • SITA currently operates at the Cairns based Bedminster composting plant, and now offers new recycling and composting solutions to more than 130,000 residents in the council areas of Cairns, Douglas and Mareeba.
  • SITA Environmental Solutions' facility is an alternative waste technology that converts municipal, commercial and industrial waste into green compost and recovers materials for re-use, reducing the volume of waste sent to landfill by around 80%.
  • Compost produced at the facility is distributed to cane farms within the region to improve crop yield.

The three principles of SITA's Advanced Waste Treatment (SAWT) technology are:

  • Recovery of all reusable resources from household waste
  • Separation of organic materials
  • Composting of almost 100% of the organic fraction into a high grade compost
