Story Title: What’s good for you now?

Everyone loves to grow their very own fresh food, but when it comes to growing fruit trees, a lot of the precious fruits can be wasted. Neville shares some tips on extending the use of different fruits so you can get the most out of your fruit trees.

How to get the most out of your home-grown fruit.

  • Citrus fruits – to get the most out of your citrus fruits, you can juice them. The juice from Valencia and Blood Oranges will store for a lot longer than the juice from Navel Oranges.
  • Nuts can be stored for months, as long as they are kept in dry places. Hanging them in an old onion bag works perfectly.
  • Drying the moisture out of fruit is an excellent way to preserve them. Tomatoes, apples, bananas, and strawberries can all be dried, and then stored in a jar or in the fridge.
  • Chinese Date – a small fruit that has a distinctive apple flavour when fresh, but when dried is more like a date.
  • Avocado fruits, will hang on to the tree in a semi-mature form for many months. Then when they are picked from the tree, they soften up and become ready to eat.
  • Olives can be preserved in a brine solution which consists of 100g of salt to 1 litre of water.
