Mitre 10 GP- Water tank Project
Episode: Three
Date: 13th September 2008
Story Title: Mitre 10 GP- Water tank Project
Presenter: Nigel Ruck
As part of this weeks Mitre 10 project Nigel Ruck explores the best way to water the garden in keeping with water restrictions. The easiest and best way to do this is to use rainwater tanks as they collect the rain and give it back to the plants as needed. Harvesting rain can sustain a garden through the dry times.
Nigel heads down to the local Mitre 10 in Kincumber NSW so he can set up a watering system for the new edible garden at Brentwood Village.
Setting up a rainwater tank
- Collect everything you need from your local Mitre 10 store including fittings for down pipes and connections for the outlets.
- Mitre 10 recommends the Nylex Slim line 2100 litre tank.
- Make sure you have your rainwater tank in position before you fill it up.
- The base for the tank has to be level and strong enough to hold the weight of the water.
- You can use reinforced concrete and pavers but make sure they are secured properly.
- 13mm Pope polypipe drip line hose takes the water to the garden beds.
- Can emit 2 litres per minute through it emitters.
- Space lines 30 centimetres apart to ensure even coverage
- 50-60% more efficient that a traditional watering system.
- Install a pump to build up pressure if you can’t run a gravity driven system.
- Use a Pope Pressure reducing valve to the get the water flow just right to suit your drip emitters.
- You can also use a battery operated programmable water controller.
- A Pope Inline filter stops dirt and grime from getting into the lines and clogging up the emitters.
