Drink Spike
Presenter: Neville Passmore
Episode: 26 (3rd November 2007)
Here’s a hint for keeping your pot plants watered while you’re away. This brilliant little invention is the Holman drip spike and it allows you to apply water from a cool drink bottle in a drip fashion.
You can adjust the drip rate from fast to very slow and because it delivers water underground straight to the roots there is no evaporation loss.
Screw the spike on, set the drip rate, push it into the soil, prick a hole in the bottle to allow air in then walk away; how simple is that?
Featured Product
Holman Drink Spike
BENEFITS: The bottle will automatically start to drip when the bottle is inverted into the soil. the adjustable drip spike can be screwed to either a 600mL, 1.25mL or 2.0mL bottle! It approximately takes a maximum of 6 days to empty 1000cc on setting 9. The drip spike flow rate can easily be adjusted by simply turning the spike bewteen setting 0 to 9. The contents of the bottle is often water, but it can be filled with a liquid fertilizer to slow leach into the soil.(Note: any solids are likely to block the small outlets, it's best to filter any mixture before use) A secondary hole is located at the top of the spike to ensure water is released in the event of a blockage to the lower outlet.
How to use: 1. Fill a plastic drink bottle full of water or liquid plant food. 2. Attach the drink bottle to the adjustable drip spike. 3. Align the setting marker to the required water flow rate. 0 = Fully open. 9 = The smallest flow rate. OFF = If the marker is NOT pointing to a number, the water flow is in the OFF position. 4. Invert the bottle and locate close to the plant root area. 5. Push the bottle & spike down piercing the soil so the bottle is self standing in the soil. 6. IMPORTANT: Prick a hole in the top of the bottle to allow the air pressure to be equal both inside & outside of the bottle. Included is a small pin to create the hole. If there is no hole, the spike will NOT drip properly allowing your plant to dry out.
