Plant of the Month: Dean Visits Eden Gardens
Presenter: Dean Boone
Episode: 26 (3rd November 2007)
I believe that shade is one of the most important considerations when designing a garden, we all need it and we all benefit from it over the long hot summer months. For people it’s as simple as putting up an umbrella but for plants it’s about creating the right environment.
Most plants can tolerate a little bit of part shade throughout the day and in really hot exposed locations many plants will often do better. There is also a really large and interesting group of plant’s that thrive in these conditions.
Creating the conditions for these plants is about developing the right eco-system before you get planting. An overhead canopy will provide protection and cool soil and it is at that stage in which we consider planting into the soil. Ideally use a location which is protected from hot winds and sun.
For shady positions you should always be looking to add colour. Foliage contrast is one way and variegated plants like the White Mondo Grass are ideal. Another great plant is the Clivia and the new yellow form is particularly beautiful. The flower colour just lifts this whole garden.
Another time honoured plant for semi-shade is Hydrangea. It is a plant that once established will go on flowering for years and years. It’s a shrub that can grow up to about 1.5 metres tall and loses its leaves in winter. In spring it bursts back into life and flowers right through the summer months.
If you’ve created the right environment then all they will need is some feeding once a year. You can also manipulate the colour by changing the soil ph using specialized Hydrangea colouring fertilisers available from all garden centres.
Hydrangeas are easy to grow and very rewarding. Eden Gardens has loads in stock and they even guarantee the quality of all their plants, so you really can’t go wrong. Hydrangeas are Eden Gardens Plant of the Month and while you’re here, why not get a wide collection of shade loving plants so you can create our own woodlands.
