Citrus Splitzer

Presenter: Melissa King
Episode: 26 (3rd November 2007)

Everyone loves Citrus and now you can have two of your favourite varieties on the one tree. That’s right double grafted citrus. They come in combinations of lemon and lime, orange and lime, and orange and lemon, which means double the flavour and double the tang.

You can always rely on the Greenery to showcase the latest and greatest new plants and this one is an absolute ripper. How would you like to make Divine Orange Cake with lime infused mascarpone using fruit from the same tree? Well now you can with Citrus Splitzer.

Interview Gary Eyles, Eyles Citrus
Melissa:
“Gary this is a really novel idea, break it down for me. Does it mean we get one type of citrus on one side of the plant and another on the other side?”
Gary
“Yes that’s right Mel. We’ve got two grafts here: one side will be the lemon and the other side will be the lime.”
Melissa
“What a great idea for space saving”
Gary
“Well that was originally our thought for smaller backyards, courtyards, places like that. So you get two in one pot or one corner of the courtyard which is a great advantage for the home gardener.”
Melissa
“I guess the first thing that came to my mind was; what happens if one gets a little bigger than the other one.”
Gary
“Well we have picked varieties that have similar vigour to try and get away from that problem but if one goes more than the other do some light pruning or adjust the fruit load. If one side is falling behind because it has a lot of fruit reduce that side down so you get both sides coming along the same.”
Melissa
“So do they require the same kinds of growing conditions?”
Gary
“Yes very similar the same as normal citrus.”
Melissa
“What conditions would you recommend?”
Gary
Full sun is best although they will be alright in partial shade. They can be in a large pot or container or in the garden, whatever suits.”

If that’s not enough to tempt you, the Greenery is always at the cutting edge of great garden design. If you want simple common sense advice on what to grow and how to grow it the qualified staff are always on hand.
