In the King Family Garden

Presenter: Melissa King
Episode: 26 (3rd November 2007)

The countdown is on, it’s week seven of our Waterwise garden makeover. It’s hard to believe that just 3 weeks ago the Kings’ backyard was a pretty typical, mundane, water hungry garden. The garden is now really starting to take shape and its really exiting to consider the prospect of the garden being truly transformed.

The boys from the Garden Company have done a lot more work on the structure of the garden. The Radial timber screening has gone in to give the garden a sense of enclosure, create garden rooms and screen out any ugly areas. The stone wall and recycled timber decking is all done and the dry creek bed and pond are starting to evolve.

Interview with Kane Parsons from ‘The Garden Company’

Michelle
“Kane, with our pond we can’t fill it using the water out of the tap so how can we fill this?”

Kane
“Well lucky for you guys you have that 1500 litre tank under the ground and obviously you can fill it from that. For anyone at home or anyone that doesn’t have a tank they have the option of letting the natural rainfall filling it up.”

It is now time to get the garden beds ready for the plants. One of the secrets to a water-wise garden is good soil preparation and that means lots of planting compost.

When you’re getting compost delivered make sure you ask about its contents first. If it doesn’t come from a good source it’s not unusual to find glass or even sharps in the mix, things that you definitely don’t want to bring into the garden.

Biogro is supplying the planting compost for the King garden and you can be sure that it is of top quality. With Biogro you get top class weed free compost that is certified organic, we have used two major mixes.

In the productive and ornamental areas we are using general planting compost. This mix contains aged and cured compost and organic matter plus composted manure and sea grass for added nutrition. Such a mix puts goodness back in the soil and helps to improve drainage and structure. Importantly organic matter helps to improve the soils ability to hold moisture and promote good soil activity which means healthy plant growth with less water.

A lot of the garden is going to be Australian plants so we have used native specific planting compost through the soil. It’s got lower phosphorous levels plus added minerals. Biogro have also increased the water holding capability of the mix by adding coco peat along with wetting agent for improved water absorption. We could add water storing crystals to the soil for extra water saving punch.

Well this week was all about getting down and dirty. In our next segment we go high tech and install some serious gadgets to make this garden beautiful, functional and water wise.
