Cordyline Red Fountain is one of the top performing strap leaf plants we have ever seen. It’s tough, attractive and versatile in the landscape, making a terrific potted plant.
This week Neville planted out some ‘Red Fountains’ in a curve along the edge of a pathway. The strappy leafed foliaged goes well with the existing mondo grass and liriopes. The colour is quite distinctive and the bright red will be picked up by the eye and carried through the curve of the path.
Dynamic Lifter is a completely safe to use form of poultry manure it has a strong perfume but because of the composting process the heat and burning potential has been eliminated.
Gardens in mountainous areas and hills areas, like Darlington, have soils which tend to be pretty gutless as the water carries all the nutrients away. If the soil is good it won’t need a lot of Dynamic Lifter to get the plants off too a good start.
When it comes to giving plants their best start in life, a shot of Seasol is perfect. Seasol is based on Seaweed extract and it stimulates the roots and gets them moving rapidly giving them the best chance possible.
The curve of the Cordylines has been echoed by a curved row of Grevilleas on the opposite side of the path. The trick to growing Grevilleas is all about pruning. If you are going out into the garden to do some trimming make sure your pruning tools are as good as the get. Fiskars are possibly the best in the world, there is one for every job in the garden.
Sometimes it is possible to use secateurs, but otherwise it might be best to used hedging shears. With Grevilleas, trim off just the top growth, this promotes new shoots to come through, give the better flowering and keep the bush compact. The best time to prune is when the flowering has finished.
