Phil visits Botanix
Presenter: Phil Dudman
Episode: 25 (20th October 2007)
Spring has been wonderful to get back into the garden and after a bit of rain everything is just bursting into colour. If you need a little extra colour for your garden then Botanix is the place to go as it is full of colourful ideas for the home and garden.
They have some great potted colour ideas? For example a little coleus works beautifully with a pink begonia, with its flowers spilling over this white glazed pot. It would be a great for a shady spot. So are Cliveas and they look so good in the new wasabi coloured pots, they don’t need a lot of water either.
Euphorbias need very little water and they look great in earthy stone pots, they’re super tough and will give you colour all year. So will bougainvilleas and pruned as a standard they make a terrific showpiece.
Huge assortments of terracotta and glazed strawberry pots have just arrived at Botanix and they’re not just for growing strawberries in either. They have one planted with the native blue coloured Leschenaultia and the colour look absolutely beautiful. They’re a lot of fun to plant up and these are some of the plants you can use.
For some instant colour go with seedlings, you get lots of plants and they’re very economical. For the shade native violets are a great little plant that always looks lovely spilling over the edges. Grasses look great too like, stunning little black mondo. Other grasses include society garlic and the good old storm lily which gets covered with white blooms. Succulents are a definite go, you’ve got lots of shapes and colours to play with and they hardly need any water.
Xmas is just round the corner and if you’re in need of a little inspiration then why not take a look in the Botanix Gift shop you can make an early start and pop in to put a few things on lay-by.
Botanix is a great destination not only for gardeners but for clubs and bus groups as well. There’s so much to see and you can enjoy a full day here complete with lunch or Devonshire tea and there are packages available.
The café has a scrumptious selection of cakes and other goodies and for those who love a long lazy morning then try the ‘Botanix Barrow Breakfast’ a breakfast so satisfying you may need a barrow to get you back to the car park.
There’s always so much on offer at Botanix, it’s more than just a garden centre. Come and check it out for yourself. You’ll find Botanix on Nelson Road Wellington Point.
