Top Ten Waterwise Plants for Queensland

Presenter: Phil Dudman
Episode: 25 (20th October 2007)

We’re all on the look out for waterwise plants and these days there’s a heap to choose from, but which ones are the best?
Well to make it easy Phil Dudman has put together his ‘Top 10 waterwise plants for Queensland’ and they’re not all succulents either.

Starting with natives, Grevilleas lead the bunch. They’re so colourful they flower for ages and of course, the birds love them.

The Bottlebrush is up there too. Again, they are uniquely Australian with spectacular blooms that always catch the eye.

When talking about stunning plants it is hard to ignore the Kangaroo Paw as they have brilliant displays of colour. They do demand perfect drainage, so mound your soil and they’ll thrive.

New Zealand Xmas Bush is a gem from our neighbours. The foliage of Xmas Bushes always looks good and in spring they fire up with a blaze of colour.

If you really love colour, you can’t go past Bougainvillea. Don’t let their thorns frighten you. Give them a regular light prune and you won’t have any problems.

Bird of Paradise is a fabulous accent plant with those characteristic bird-like blooms which make an excellent cut flower.

The Clivia may look delicate but it is super tough. It usually has orange flowers, but you’ll find reds, yellows and creams as well. Great for those dry shady spots.

Bromeliads are also good for shady spots and there are so many wonderful shapes and forms to play with. They look so tropical but they need very little water.

A surprise is Box or Buxus sp - an age-old classic used for hedge borders in formal gardens. Always looks good and you couldn’t kill it if you tried.

Finally Phil had to include the Zanzibar Gem. A great looking indoor plant that performs its best when you forget to water it

Plants like these make it easy to have a beautiful waterwise garden but it gets even easier because right now you can claim a state government rebate when you buy waterwise plants. All you need is a form which you can download from the website or pick up from your nursery. Make sure you fill it in correctly and you’ll receive up to $50 back for $100 worth of purchases.
