Lavender Farm

Presenter: Kim Syrus
Episode: 25 (20th October 2007)

This week Kim dropped into the Lyndoch Lavender farm where the air is thick with a fresh, sweet perfume that invites you in. It’s not often you visit a farm that smells as good as this one.

Set amongst the picturesque hills just outside of Lyndoch, the two and half hectare garden is filled with over 80 different varieties of lavender. Open to the public, you can meander through the large plantings, stopping to admire the view and taking in the heady scents.

Here are just a few of the many varieties you’ll see. The ferny leaf Canary Island Lavender (L. canariensis) with its distinctive foliage, the French lavender Candicans (L. dentata ’Candicans’) filled with masses of light blue flowers and Sugar Plum (L. stoechas ‘Sugar Plum’) with lines of small, dark purple blooms running down each flower head.

Another great thing about exploring a place like this is you’ re bound to find something a little bit different like the green lavender (L. viridis) it sounds strange but looks great.

Lavender is extremely tough and uses very little water. The plantation was watered for only 4 hours last year, surviving and thriving on only natural rainfall.

The fantastic plants are not at the farm for their good looks, they also provide the main ingredient for a range of products. The flowers are harvested by hand during January and February using sickles. Some are bunched and dried while others end up on the menu.

The gift shop at the Lyndoch Lavender Farm is packed with an amazing array of products including Lavender Marmalade, Lavender Vinegar and Lavender Chocolate Truffles.

If certain lavender takes your fancy, head down to the small nursery and chances are, you’ll be able to buy a plant to take home and grow in your garden.

If you’re looking for a place to visit less than an hour’s drive from Adelaide, then take a visit the Lyndoch Lavender Farm. Have a wander, take in the scenery and the fragrances and let yourself simply relax. They even have a café.
