The King Family Garden

Presenter: Melissa King
Episode: 25 (20th October 2007)

It is episode 6 of our 11 week journey where we transform an average Australian family’s backyard into a waterwise paradise.

The boys from the Garden Company have had a busy week. They’ve made a big start on all of the hard landscaping.

The fence was transformed using Bristol Treacle coloured paint to blend with the natural style of our new water-wise garden. Forget the paint brush.
Interview: Andrew King and Kane Parsons from the Garden Company.

Andrew
“Kane the paving looks excellent what materials did you use?”

Kane
“It’s great isn’t it? It’s called Cobb and Co. It’s a quartz limestone from Eco Concepts in Richmond. One of the reasons we picked it was for its different sizes and randomness of it. It gives it a different look and opens up the area rather than just having something too close and sizes all similar.”

Andrew
“It takes up a fair bit of area so I guess we’ll be using less grass?”

Kane
“It does absolutely; one of the things we have gone for is a little bit larger area of paving and decking for a nice entertaining area. We’ve also incorporated a gravel path which will swerve around. So the lawn area is quite limited. Which is a lot less maintenance and a lot better in terms of water use.”

Andrew
“I love the effects of the stone wall, where is this from?”

Kane
“This is also from Eco Concepts, they call it alpine walling. Basically we have chosen it for its rough, dry stone look. It’s a great product but basically it comes in corners aswell which adds a nice thick look to the wall. They also supply capping to match it which gives it a nice look. We’ve picked this nice curved wall to make a nice viewing point from the main dining area and it also works as a setting area aswell.”

Andrew
“What sort of timber is this?”

Kane
“This is recycled string bark from Eco Timber in Richmond. We have chosen a recycled timber to go with the sustainable living landscape. It will be agreat area to have a few cold drinks.”

Andrew
“Yeah we are looking forward to coming out and having a celebration”

In our next installment we get down and dirty and create more magic in the King’s backyard.
