Waterwise ways in WA

Presenter: Neville Passmore and Trevor Cochrane
Episode: 25 (20th October 2007)

It’s been a brilliant year for rain fall because we’ve had such great late rains. But, believe it or not we have still missed our average by a long way, about 25% on average.

The water we have saved plus the extra we’ve stored will go a long way to keeping Perth green this summer. It will also leave us with a better surplus at the end of the summer. If we are smart that puts us in a good position for 2008 onwards.

Remember the rules on how we use water have changed in some places. If you’re in the Perth/ Mandurah region and have a bore you can only use it to water your garden three times a week, before 9am or after 6pm.

If you live north of the line from Kalbarri to Kalgoorlie you should now only water on alternate days, if your south of that line you are now watering two days a week like the metropolitan area has done successfully for many years now.

Councils are doing their bit by not watering during the day and even schools and businesses are tackling the problems through education and best practice implementation. Together we can make a difference and it’s great to see all West Aussies coming together so positively to save our most precious resource.

There are of course things you can do in your own backyard that have a significant positive effect. Simply improving your soil by adding organically rich humus like Biowise makes an enormous difference. All garden beds should be mulched heavily too in a 100mm layer, this reduces the evaporation of the water you put into the garden by as much as 50%.

Unfortunately not all mulches and soil improvers are the same and it’s important you get the best quality possible. In WA that’s a product called Biowise. Its weed, disease and human pathogen free yet its rich in nutrients and water saving organics.

To help get you started we’ve got a competition for you to win a load of this great bulk soil improver or the premium quality mulch - delivered to your door if you live in the metro area.

Simply visit our web site for terms conditions and to answer this question – adding a 100mm thick layer of mulch will reduce evaporation from your garden by? 10%, 30% or 50%?

Over the next few weeks we will be giving a heap of tips on how to reduce your gardens water consumption as we get move into summer.
