Waterwise Gardening

Presenter: Trevor Cochrane and Neville Passmore
Episode: 24 (13th October 2007)

New water efficiency measures have been introduced into WA to save more water and working together on this will help keep our great state beautiful. One change, affects the use of bores for watering our gardens. From the 1st October and if you live in the Perth and Mandurah district you will be able to water your gardens three times a week and we all know that that is plenty of water to have a beautiful and productive garden.

For people gardening on the sandy plain there is another way to establish a beautiful garden using less water and that is through the massive enrichment of soil and heavy mulching of garden beds. By simply placing a layer of composted humus such as Biowise soil conditioner. A thick layer adds valuable humus to the soil improving moisture and nutrient retention. Mix it in with fifty fifty of the existing soil in the ground and this will do it the world of good for sandy soils. It is also very effective with loams as it enriches the soil and stimulates massive plant growth. It is rich in nutrients and trace elements and does not have any harmful pathogens to humans or pets.

For people living above the line that connects Kalbarri to Kalgoorlie you now have an alternative watering day regime. For the people below the line now have a two day per week watering regime which is exactly the same as the operation in the metropolitan area. All of these new water efficiency measures are designed to reduce consumption avoiding wasting water.

A 100mm thick layer of mulch has a significant effect in reducing water evaporation. The Gurus feel that every garden bed should be covered with top quality mulch in springtime before the summer sets in. Top quality mulch is one that meets the Australia premium standards such as Biowise mulch because it is composted and really works.

The key to reducing water consumption is for the whole community to get involved in this project particularly in the area of eliminating or reducing waste water. Businesses and local government and even schools are developing plans to reduce consumption.

Thanks to The Garden Gurus and Biowise you could have the chance to win two cubic metres of premium quality mulch just in time for summer! Simply CLICK HERE for your chance to WIN!
