Capturing Rainwater
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Episode: 24 (13th October 2007)
One way to guarantee your garden will survive summer is to harvest rainwater and use it on your plants. The trouble is you need a rain water tank and then you have to get it to you garden which usually involves a special tap timer or controller and a pump.
The good news is, as rainwater use has become popular again, technology has improved to make sure it’s easy to use. The latest technologies in controllers are a good example. They normally wouldn’t work hooked straight up to a rainwater tank and this is because the pressure drives the functionality in normal controllers.
Thankfully Holman Industries has developed a special low pressure controller for rainwater tank use. It simply screws straight into the water outlet from the tank and from there you attach a special in line poly pipe dripper system. The green poly pipe drippers have a higher water release which makes them brilliant for running around vegetable and herb gardens.
Using fresh water like rain water for veggie gardens is the best way to go. The fresh water ensures the highest quality edibles. This means you can grow the most nutritious freshest food for the family and it really doesn’t get any better than that.
In Trevor’s garden as the pipe winds through my garden beds in the veggie patch he has planted a lot of seeds. Legumes such as beans add goodness into the soil and provide excellent nutritional benefits for gardeners they are also easy to grow.
He has set up some bean beds with runners and broad beans as well as dwarf beans before and they are on their way. As the soil has been enriched with cow manure and straw there is no need to add extra fertiliser, if anything was to be added chicken manure would be the go.
Whilst the subsurface irrigation delivers heaps of water as needed the timer will only need to run once a week until the peak of summer because the soil is so well prepared. This saves precious rainwater.
Trevor’s simple irrigation system is the product of the clever people at Holmans Industries and you’ll find their products at leading hardware and irrigation specialist stores.
