Taking Succulent Cuttings
Presenter: Judy Horton
Episode: 24 (13th October 2007)
Succulents have become very fashionable in recent years and, when we look at their beauty and variety, it’s easy to understand why. They’re also some of the cleverest plants because they’re a bit like plant camels. They can store water when it’s wet, and then use it to help survive through dry times.
Succulents are some of the easiest plants to grow from cuttings because the stored moisture keeps them alive while their new roots are forming. Many are able to grow new plants from just a small piece of stem, or even a leaf.
Start by filling a pot with a specific succulent and cacti potting mix like Thrive Cacti and Succulent Potting Mix. This will ensure that these plants have the extra-good drainage they need. Then take a piece of the plant.
Dip into some cutting powder and then simply pop the leaves into the mix. Keep moist, but not too wet, and in few weeks you’ll see a tiny plant forming at the base of the old leaf.
If you have trouble keeping plants alive in hot, dry spots in your garden, then try some succulents. They’re far more likely to survive where most other plants would completely fade away.
