Sue visits Dawson’s Garden World

Presenter: Sue McDougall
Episode: 24 (13th October 2007)

Garden centres and open gardens are some of the best sources of inspiration when it comes to getting ideas for the garden. Sure, you can look in all the books you like, but gardeners are tactile people and love to look, smell and touch their way through a garden centre. This is one of the reasons why our garden club events have been so popular over the year at Dawsons Garden World stores.

Often the sharing of ideas and getting gardening questions answered is enough to give our members confidence to achieve great things in the garden, so lets take our members and you on a tour of this garden centre and look at some of the best options for a successful Waterwise garden.

When it comes to the seedling section of the garden centre many people are worried about what to plant as they think that all of these types of plants are going to use too much water. But heres a tip, when you’re planting anything, whether it is vegetables or flowers, always had some water storing granules. They swell up in the soil, absorb moisture around the plants roots and hold it there for the plants for when they need it for up to five years.

When you’re looking at selecting shrubs for an exposed position in your garden, look for silver foliaged plants. The silver foliage reflects the light and they perform brilliantly in sunny positions.

Roses are actually a very waterwise choice once they’re established and often roses are the one plant left surviving in an abandoned garden. Even if you are not a fanatical rose lover, roses will add brilliant colour to your garden for most of the year.

Satchmo is a floribunda rose that bears brilliant scarlet roses with a slight fragrance. Something you may not know is it was named for the great jazz man Louis Armstrong. It’s resistant to disease and perfect for hedges.

Peace was bred in 1945 and still as popular today as the day it was released. This tall grower bears classic double yellow flowers of pale yellow edged with pink and is a must have for any rose garden

Floribunda roses are the ones that have clusters of flowers and are perfect for hedging and mass planting. Dearest is a great floribunda rose looks fantastic mass planted.

These roses are in flower for most of the year.

Over the past few weeks, we have featured just a handful of roses that Dawson’s grow. If you are looking for different colours, grab a copy of their free rose catalogue, in it you’ll find all the varieties laid out by colour.

Featured Plants:

Peace rose (Rosa, Large-Flowered, Hybrid Tea, ‘Peace’)
Satchmo rose (Rosa, Cluster-Flowered, Floribunda, ‘Satchmo’)
Dearest rose (Rosa, Cluster-Flowered, Floribunda, ‘Dearest’)

Featured Products:

Yates Waterwise Water Storage Crystals

When added to potting mix or garden soil, the crystals absorb up to 400 times their own weight in water. This water is then released back to the plants over time as they require it. The crystals reduce water wastage, increase the time between waterings and promote improved plant survival during dry times. The crystals are effective for up to 5 years, then biodegrade harmlessly.
