Yates Garden Winner Victoria

Presenter: Melissa King
Episode: 24 (13th October 2007)

Earlier in the year the Garden Gurus ran a Yates Garden competition, where a winner in every state received $1000 worth of Yates water wise products and a visit from one of the gurus. Melissa visited the home of our Victorian Winner the Cavanagh family to give them some top water saving advice.

Yates have delivered enough water saving products like wetting agents, water storing crystals, fertilisers and soil improvers to keep this family in water wise nirvana for a whole year. The first item on the agenda is the backyard.

Consultation with Jenny Cavanagh

Melissa:
“Jenny what are some of your major concerns?”

Jenny:
“The lawn, we’re having trouble keeping it green and there are some dry spots.”

Melissa:
“It’s not looking too bad, the good thing about buffalo is its self repairing but you could give it a kick along with some lawn food. Yates have a Dynamic Lifter Lawn food which is really good because it is organic, which helps to improve the soils but its also got lots of nitrogen for lots of leafy green growth”

“I have noticed some lawn areas has some worn patches, I always say why fight it if it is an area which is well used it might be better used as a path”

Jenny:
“Melissa, do you have any good tips to make my garden more water wise?”

Melissa:
“I think you have done really well with your plant selection you’ve got some tough beautiful plants here, there are a few things you can use. I’d use a soil wetter just to make sure the water you apply is getting through to your plants. I’d mix in some water storing crystals; they are like a back up supply of water when times are dry and then the third thing is a healthy garden is more tolerant to dry conditions.”

Jenny:
“Mel, I’d love an idea for a screening plant for this area. I had a beautiful Hakea here but it died a few years ago.”

Melissa:
“It might be nice to continue that native theme because you live in such a bushy area, I would go for something like a bottlebrush, that way you can bring some birds into the garden. Or alternatively go with one of the local plants, like a wonderful local Mint bush (Prostranthera sp.) which has beautiful purple or white flowers. They flower in spring and have lovely minty foliage.

Featured Products:

Dynamic Lifter Organic Lawn Food

Organic fertiliser to gently feed all lawn types. Granulated Dynamic Lifter Organic plant food particles which release nutrients slowly. Added Blood and Bone, fishmeal and seaweed organically enrich and improve the soil. Organic particles are small enough to filter through to soil level. Improves the structure and moisture retention of the soil. Encourages earthworms and beneficial soil micro-organisms.

Yates Waterwise Concentrated Soil Wetter

Combination of soil wetting agent, liquid clay breaker, trace elements and seaweed. Soil wetting agent allows water to penetrate water repellent soils. Liquid clay breaker softens hard clay soil and improves soil structure. Trace elements, including chelated iron, improve plant growth and encourage deep green foliage. Seaweed is a natural plant growth promotant. Economical concentrated formula for larger gardens - makes up to 600L of soil wetter. Can be used to treat both the garden and potted plants.

Yates Waterwise Water Storage Crystals

When added to potting mix or garden soil, the crystals absorb up to 400 times their own weight in water. This water is then released back to the plants over time as they require it. The crystals reduce water wastage, increase the time between waterings and promote improved plant survival during dry times. The crystals are effective for up to 5 years, then biodegrade harmlessly.

Thrive Shake and Feed

In just one easy application, Thrive Shake 'n' Feed fertilises and improves plant health by supplying a granular wetting agent and some root-promoting seaweed extract to the root system. The fertiliser in Thrive Shake 'n' Feed combines fast release, slow release and controlled release particles that continue feeding for up to six months.
