The King Family Garden

Presenter: Melissa King
Episode: 24 (13th October 2007)

During the last stage of the new King family water wise garden, the garden company revealed the garden design and left a huge hole in the garden ready for a recycled water tank.

The guys from VersiTank have come to the party with a new water storage system with a 15,000 litre capacity. It’s now just up to the team from the garden company to put it all together.

The VersiTank is made up of a series of modules which can be assembled as interlocked units. They are light and are easily put together; they are like Lego for big kids. The hole is first covered with a protective layer of geotextile from Geofabrics Australia; the filter fabric protects the membrane liner from any sharp edges.

Next comes the membrane supplied by Curtis Barriers it made from high strength low density polyethylene pre welded off site to get the right dimensions. Its role is to hold the water and eliminate the possibility of leakage.

The modules are inserted next, all one hundred and twenty of them. The whole thing is wrapped up and fabric. Once everything is in place the whole area is backfilled, so that you would never know that it was there.

The liner is used to hold the water and the cells and structures provide strength. This allows the tank to be back filled over the top and build structures, like driveways, turf or garden beds over the top.

With the right connecting pipes water that would normally go down the drain goes straight into the tank. This water is then pumped out into the garden using an efficient irrigation system.

The VersiTank is buried under what will eventually be the lawn and path area. The great thing about the VersiTank is that they are so strong they can be buried under high traffic areas like driveways, without the need for reinforcing.

The VersiTank is adaptable to any height and width up to about 2.5 metres and you can change the design to fit it into areas with limited space.
