Yates Waterwise Garden Winner South Australia

Presenter: Kim Syrus
Episode: 24 (13th October 2007)

Kim Syrus visited Heather Bitter the lucky Yates Waterwise Garden Competition winner just outside Lyndoch in South Australia. Heather’s prize is a $1000 dollars worth of Yates products for her garden and a special Garden Gurus consultation.

Kim
“Hello Heather and congratulation, what a fantastic part of the world to live.”

Heather
“It’s absolutely beautiful I must say I am biased.”

Kim
“What were some of the challenges when you first moved in?”

Heather
“Water is an issue, and making sure you’ve got the supplies going everywhere efficiently. Because Gordon and I both work it needed to be as carefree as possible. So we have actually put in dripper systems the whole way around.”

Kim
“I’ve noticed plenty of rainwater tanks; do you use those on the garden?”

Heather:
“Yes, we use two big ones for the house and we’ve got a tank on the other side of the house which is all used for the garden.”

Kim:
“The gardens growing really well, the secrets being mulch and drippers”

Heather
“Yes and I guess the last thing being we have chooks, we have sheep, we have a horse so there is lots of manure for the garden which is fantastic”

Kim
“I’ve noticed you’ve got a couple of plants that need moving”

Heather
“Yes, we’ve got a couple of what would be very old Camellias that we would like shifted.”

Kim went about moving the Camellias.
They had been exposed to the sun and were looking more than a little sad. Before digging them up Kim trimmed the camellias back by about a half or a third and sprayed the plant with Yates Stressguard. Stressguard coats the leaves and reduces moisture loss, making it easier for the plant to recover after transplanting.

Conditioning the soil with organic matters is really important for improving soil structure. Yates Waterwise 2 in 1 is great because it has a wetting agent for water retention plus it nutrients to give your plants a real boost.
