Kalanchoe Winter Wonders

Episode: #18 18/8/07
Presenter: Phil Dudman

You see them every winter bursting into brilliant bloom, although you will notice that this happens when a lot of flowering plants go to sleep. They are incredibly versatile, and there are lots of different ways that you can enjoy their colour but the best thing is that they need very little care and very little water to keep them looking good. They are a type of Kalanchoe, but some people call them Winter Wonders, and they bloom right through the colder months well into spring.

The colour range is quite dazzling, one of the hottest pinks you will find in any bloom. There is also a lovely deep red as well as a yellow which is a lovely strong bright yellow and to top it off there is a fiery orange as well, all beautiful warm tones.

They are just perfect for potting up into a smart looking pot, with a bit of potting mix and the good thing about that is that you can shift them about as you please. So you can place them wherever you need that bright splash of colour.

They prefer a nice sunny spot outside but you can also bring them inside for a week or two a time if you like and they will be quite happy.

They are also perfect for mass planting into troughs where they put on a great show and if you need something colourful for a hanging basket they are a top choice.

In the garden you can use them like a bedding plant where you can group the colours or even mix them up a bit, they make a great show that has no fuss. Phil says that they are no fuss because Kalanchoe’s are actually a kind of succulent plant, so they do not need a lot of water to perform well. They are one of the most colourful waterwise plants you will find.

As far as feeding goes all they need is a little slow release fertiliser in the spring. Something like a once a year feeder for roses will do the trick and remember to give them all the nutrients they need in small doses over 12 months.

Pest and diseases are not a problem either these plants really just look after themselves as long as you can protect them from frost they will thrive and flower year after year with very little effort.

Another great thing about the Kalanchoe’s is that they are so easy to propagate. Just take some cuttings from the tips, remove any flowers and then take off all the leaves leaving one or two at the top.

Pop them into some potting mix or even some seed raising mix and in no time the roots will start to form at the base, which means that you will have lots of new plants to fill your garden with colour next year.

So there you have it the Kalanchoe winter wonder a tidy compact plant versatile, waterwise, easy care with oodles of colour from winter to spring. They are in nurseries now and well worth getting a hold of.
