Fertilizer
Episode: #17 11/8/07
Presenter: Nigel Ruck
Just like us plants enjoy a good feed and a well balanced diet with all the nutrients but of course they can’t just pop down to the shop and get lots of fruit and vegies, far from it. In fact, they are the ones that provide us with the goodies, so the least we can do is return the favour. That is where fertilizer comes in
Out in the bush or rainforest plants have evolved and adapted to fit in with the environment, surviving on the natural elements in their particular eco system. Which is more then you can say about some of us humans.
In a man made garden environment which often contains a wide range of different plants, improving soils with organics and using fertilizers helps to keep things healthy. And remember too strong healthy plants are far better equip to fend off pests and diseases. A bit like us, if you are stressed out or run down you get colds or the flu but if you keep fit and healthy you rarely get sick.
Feeding your plants in ground or in pots is really strait forward; you have just got to remember to do it. Nigel likes to use a combination of organic stuff like Dynamic lifter for example, combined with a slow release granular product which contains the big three, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium, and all the trace elements for the fine tuning of the plants immune system.
This is very similar to the health and well being regime Nigel likes to use himself a bit of red meat, fish and chicken, combined with plenty of fresh fruit, vegies, grains and seeds, and on the odd occasion, washed down with a little bit of liquid fertilizer!
Now spring is only around the corner which means lots of plant activity now do them a well earned favour and give them a bit of a feed. Always remember to read the instructions on the tub before you get going and water in well after applying.
