Native Landscaping
Episode: #17 11/8/07
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Of all the different garden styles native gardens are often considered to be the messiest. They are very informal by nature. They don’t always have to be that way. With a really well constructed garden they can be quite outstanding and give a very clean effect. This is often been the reason why many people do not include native plants in their gardens, it is also the reason a lot of designers haven’t incorporated native species with exotic species in the garden. Well that all changes now, because there is a new paradigm coming in, designers are started to use both. The garden that Trevor visits designed by Exhibit Green Landscape Architecture is an example for these new trends.
There are so many things to love about the garden, one of the best is the integrating of the exotic and native plants together, like the little gem magnolias’ along side the climbing native wisteria.
Using this planting technique you get the best of both worlds, the winter and spring flower of Australian natives, and in the summer, moving into autumn, spectacular colours from the exotic flowers.
The exotic plants in this garden show some liriops, cycads, deities and strelitzia’s, to name just a few. All have good water efficiency attributes once established as well as adding great diversity and foliage shape as well as plant structure. Where they contrast with the native species such as the grevillea where it really stands out.
Another critical part of the waterwise design that features here is the landscape structure/hard scape. The garden has wonderful formality achieved by setting a very structured lay out, using things like limestone blocks as garden bed borders also in retaining walls.
A clever idea is substituting gumnuts as river pebbles; this is not only visually effective but also environmentally friendly.
If you are looking for some good advice on setting up a beautiful garden, well don’t be scared to mix natives with exotics, they work really well together. If you do want some help, the best people to help are land scape designers or architects.
If you did like the garden on the show, it was created by Exhibit Green. For more information in Exhibit Green Landscape Architecture visit: www.exhibitgreen.com.au
