Planting Bug in Winter

Episode: #17 11/8/07
Presenter: Sue McDougall

It is easy to get the planting bug at the moment, because garden centres are so full of inspiration. When Sue visits a garden centre she can’t help herself, she always has to take all the beautiful plants home to put in her own garden.

One little bit of advice, if you are planting at the moment, always choose multiple numbers of the same variety of plants. This way they always look fantastic in your garden when you get home this is the basic rule of great landscape design.

The other is to choose plants for year round interest look for foliage and textures to add extra dimension and plants that flower at different times of year. Bright bold colours for winter, and cool soft pastel shades in summer, this will help keep the garden nice and cool on those scorching hot summers’ days.

Sue makes a point to go to a garden centre once a month, whether to buy something or not, it helps to get an idea of what is in flower and looking gorgeous.
This helps plan a garden that looks brilliant all year around. If you are a spring gardener, that only comes out on nice sunny days. You will notice that you only buy plants that flower at that time of the year. The end result being a beautiful garden for two months of the year and the rest of the time it is looking pretty dull.
