Heyne’s Garden Centre

Episode: #17 11/8/07
Presenter: Kim Syrus

One of the most recognisable names in gardening would have to be Heyne’s, they have been growing plants for more then 140 years you never know that large tree in your back yard might just have come from here. Located on the parade of Beulah Park it is a great joy to walk into a garden centre that is absolutely bursting with plants and plenty more.

Enjoy wandering though the masses of indoor and out door plants, check out the topiary scattered around, kangaroos, emus, each one a work of art, just ask the gardener.

Among the large mix of water smart plants you will find a whole range of strappy leafed plants to suit all yards, from your big architectural plants, like your Yuccas, to your Australian grasses like your lomandra and dianellas. They are all light on water usage and easy to grow!

You will never go hungry with the amazing range of fruit trees, including apples, cherries and apricots, as well as loads of citrus that all ready to be planted out now. Or if you are in the market for a good reliable peach then an Elberta is one of the best.

Berries are certainly worth planting, the new range of boysenberries, raspberries and thornless black berries will make picking and eating so much more enjoyable.

There is still time to plant your roses, and there are loads to choose from. Just a quick tip, it sounds a bit crazy but once you have planted your rose cut it back by half this helps develop strong new growth and produces a better shaped bush.

It is important to give your plants the best start so don’t forget to add water crystals to each hole or pot when planting out, these hold valuable moisture around the root zone to get your plants through summer.

Next time your in Heyne’s garden centre don’t forget to checkout their cactus house, here you will find an amazing range of weird and wonderful cacti and succulents for your garden or maybe window ledge.

There is something for every gardener, so get yourself to Heyne’s today and loose yourself in a great garden centre. The hard part is working out where you begin.

Don’t forget to pick up the latest copy of the Garden Gurus news paper, available now from your local Mitre 10 and other good garden centres.
