Your Garden Questions Answered

Episode: # 14 14/07/07
Presenter: Sue McDougall
At the moment the ornamental trees are not looking inspiring, but it’s the best time of the year to get them planted. The trees have a chance to establish their root system before the warmer weather sets in. And in winter Dawson’s Garden World stores have the biggest range of trees available, so if you are looking for a special tree or feature now the time to get planting.

Chinese Tallows with their rich claret and orange tones in autumn look stunning in a confined area and Manchurian pears with their rich burgundy foliage are a great specimen tree.
Flowering Plums provide year round interest, with
colourful foliage and pink blossom in spring are idea for smaller gardens
If you would love to be part of our garden events we hold regularly at Dawson’s Garden World contact the garden gurus, just like our club members have done to get their gardening questions answered.

Garden Questions Answered
Wollemi Pine – Looks at is has been burnt at some stage during really hot weather. A thing to remember is not to over water it or under water because the symptoms are the same. The best solution is to lift it off the ground so that it drains freely.
Sour Sop – Can be controlled with glyphosate while it is flowering because then it is taken up by the plant. If you start to pull it out all the little bulbuls are left in the ground and it will shoot up again next year.
Ash White Fly – This is a problem for deciduous trees because they tend not to colour up as much as nicely as it could. Spray the foliage with Yates Confidor as it could start to affect other deciduous trees.
Red Spider Mite – One of the easiest ways to control them is to use Yates Pest Oil. Spray it again in ten days time, this wont burn the plant because it is so cool at the moment. Give it a light trim to make it bush up.
