Ask Judy
Episode: # 13 07/07/07
Presenter: Judy Horton
Lots of people think the winter garden is a bit dull, so Judy has an easy way to get some instant colour – fill a basket with living flowers. Even if you have had trouble growing baskets before, you will find it is much easier to keep them happy when the weather is cooler.
Judy always uses a plastic basket because they don’t dry out as quickly as the wire ones. Yates Tuscan baskets are even better because they have a self-watering feature.
Sit it on top of a bucket so that it is stable while you are planting it up. Fill with some Waterwise Potting Mix or a special hanging basket mix. Either will do as both have added water crystals and soil wetters that will hold extra moisture. Crowd the plants in together so that, as they grow, they will give you a full, flowery effect.
Water the basket well from the top to settle everything in. The great thing about these baskets is that, once they are hanging up, you can water them through the inlet hole in the side. Next, sprinkle on some Shake ‘n’ Feed. It is a combination of fast-releasing and slower granules will keep the plants happy for a long time. Now you are ready to hang your basket in place.
