Possum Creek Lodge
Episode: # 13 07/07/07
Presenter: Neville Passmore
Before air conditioning was an every day reality, those who could afford it tended to head for the hills. This happened in every state of Australia as those cool afternoon breezes made life possible in real hot sunny conditions and a couple of hundred metres of elevation made a noticeable difference to the hot temperatures.
Kalamunda in Western Australia was such a place in its hay day in the early part of last century supported some spectacular gardens. Possum Creek Lodge Bed and Breakfast is right in the middle of the old garden precinct. The soils are gravely and lacking in organic matter.
The owners of the home have asked for a recommendation for a low maintenance plant that can be used as a border planting along some of the garden beds. You have to take into account the fact that it is a steeply sloping block and it means that all the moisture is going to drain away rapidly.
Neville bought in a couple of Dianellas that will work a treat in this sort of garden. Dianella Little Rev (Dianella revoluta ‘Little Rev’) is so tough Neville thinks it could possibly be made of cast iron. It is a selection of one of the hills natives plants, which means it can get by on the sniff of a wrung out sponge once it has established a root system.
The blue foliage has a sculptured look which makes it at home in modern as well as older gardens. This Dianella resents wet feet so is perfect for well drained hills soils.
If you thought that Little Rev had a license to be tough then you should take a look at the queen of low maintenance dianellas; Little Jess (Dianella revoluta ‘Little Jess’). It is a terrific plant in the landscape as it has that lovely fresh green look about it, is compact and it can handle road verge living like nothing else. That means it can cop pollution, terrific heat and dryness. The great joy of the plant is that it has clouds of beautiful purple flowers right through the springtime.
Neville is all ready to plant out the Dianella’s but there is a problem that needs to be taken care of first, it is a rotten weed called sour sop. It can be given a zap with Yates Zero to knock it off but you are best to wait until it comes into flower as it is more vulnerable. This means you may need to wait a couple of weeks until the little yellow flowers appear and then spray the whole of the plant, including the flowers.
Two weeks later it will then be possible to plant out the dianellas in a weed free environment.
