Ilda’s Garden

Episode: # 13 07/07/07
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

One of the things that Trevor loves most about the street he lives in are his neighbours gardens, there are some real beauties.

Bob and Ilda Schorer started building there garden in 1964 in what was very tough conditions. Today it is a riot of colour, most of the year round. Trevor managed to talk Ilda into showing him around.

Ilda has quite a few unusual plants that look like they may have been collected over a number of years. Ilda describes herself as a bit greedy and that she always likes to have a go at something she has never tried before to see if she can succeed.

At the moment the camellias look fantastic and Ilda thinks that if she was to start again from scratch that the majority of her plants would be camellias. The roses have also just finished a spectacular display and there is also plenty of great looking fruit to choose from.

This spring, all across Australia ordinary people with extraordinary gardens are opening them to support charity. Bob and Ilda are supporting the Amanda Young Foundation which does research and also education with meningococcal disease.

When you get a chance to visit the gardens there are lots of learning experiences as you get to see how different plants perform in different conditions. It is a really good opportunity to learn and help your favourite charity.
