Dean takes a look at a pretty typical balcony, in need of some life and a little bit of TLC. What Dean wants to do is show you just how simply and easily you can transform any space into your own little piece of paradise.
Dean wants to create a real sense of depth a create a space that is a welcoming place to sit and relax. The balcony gets pretty hot in summer so the plant selection needs to be for tough and very, very resilient.
As with any balcony garden you have to start with your pot selection. Lightweight and stylish, the Australian made Artesian classic pots from Yates will definitely do the job. What Dean is going to do is layer the pots and the planting to achieve maximum depth and sense of space in the small but nice little balcony.
The pots have a self watering mechanism in the base, so there is no need for a saucer, and Yates have even made sure that the pots won’t fade by making them UV resistant.
Plant selection is lots of strappy foliage and only plants that are going to be fool proof for the garden. Dean uses a combination of greens and plum tones with Cordylines, Yuccas and Rhapis Palm.
The garden doesn’t have lots of flowers, but that is OK. The balcony needs to look good all year round and the best way to achieve that is with foliage colour and contrast. A little picture or even a mirror somewhere on the wall will give it that extra edge.
