Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens
Episode: # 12 30/06/07
Presenter: Phil Dudman
Phil visits the beautiful Tamborine Mountains Botanic Gardens and the amazing thing about it is the range of plants that can be grown there. It is not all tropical palms and hibiscus like you would expect to see on the coast. Up in the mountains you can grow all those sort of things you expect to see but in cooler climates.
Plants like magnolias (Magnolia Grandiflora) with their gorgeous goblet shaped blooms, magnificent deciduous trees with their earthy autumn colours, wisteria vines (Wisteria floribunda ‘Alba’) laden with pendulous flowers. Glorious camellias, sasanquas, japonicas and reticulatas.
So why is it that these temperate plants form so well in the sub tropical climate? Tamborine Mountain is about 550 metres above sea level so the temperature is always around 5 degrees cooler than it is on the coast.
On top of that, the soil is deep and rich which makes it a kind of gardeners’ paradise. There is something very special about the botanic gardens. Everything in the garden has been created not by professional horticulturalists but by the dedicated work of volunteers from the local garden club.
It is hard to believe that the gully was once a terrible weedy mess totally smothered in lantana. With hours and hours of hard work they have managed to transform it into a beautiful parkland setting, with open expanses of lawn, lakes and streams, meandering pathways and beautifully tended garden beds.
The volunteers that make it happen meet there every week to carry out the routine maintenance as well as work in the gardens own propagation nursery. The sale of plants through the nursery help to generate much needed funds and each year the garden club stages ‘Springtime on the Mountain’.
It is an even that attracts thousands of visitors to Tamborine Mountain and that raises interest and support for the very special community project. Through Springtime on the Mountain they are able to raise thousands of dollars which is all poured back into garden to keep it evolving.
It really is amazing what a group of passionate gardeners can do when they share a dream.
