Trevor’s Garden
Episode: # 12 30/06/07
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Everyone has seen the developments in Neville’s home garden and it may come as no surprise that Trevor is also doing exactly the same thing at the moment. The only thing is, Trevor’s is on a much larger scale!
Trevor has an acre and a half in the hills of Perth and it really is a significant project. It will take 6 to 12 months to do most of the major structural things but right now Trevor is dealing with the land clearing, getting rid of the environmental weeds and problems that have been associated with them.
The creek was an absolute mess when Trevor and his family first moved in. It was chock full of all sorts of invasive plant species like arum lilies, blackberries and trees like weeping willows right on the edge of the creek with roots that clag up the flow. Over the next few weeks they will be working on clearing the creek out and setting it up so that it will be sustainable for the future.
One of the most important things you should be doing when you get a new garden set up is coming to terms with the type of soil that you are dealing with. On Trevor’s block there are three different types. Really hard laterite gravel at the top, a gravely sand about midway down and at the bottom there is some fantastic rich lime which banks right down to some clay on the creek bed.
In improving the soils you can use a lot of the same strategies. A soil improver like the recycled kind Trevor is using is called Biowise. You can get this particular on in Western Australia but there are all sorts of quality soil improvers you can buy in bulk from all around Australia.
Trevor is also using a lot of pea straw and hay. They are fantastic ways to improve the quality of your garden soil. There is nothing better than adding fresh fruit and veg to the kitchen table and Trevor plans on doing this from his very own grand scale vegetable patch.
All the beds are raised using sleepers and they have used a great mix of organic soils and composts. The seedlings love it and they are taking off like crazy. Around the outside of the vege patch are also going to be espaliered fruit trees.
Coming up over the next few weeks we will see Trevor’s garden grow and evolve and in 12 months time you will get to see the end product.
