What to Do

Episode: # 12 30/06/07
Presenter: Phil Dudman

When it comes to fruit tree’s Queensland’s own Birdwood Nursery are the most highly respected names in the industry. Their quality is absolutely superb.

The man behind the label is a guy called Peter Young. He has been growing fruit trees now for over 30years and his knowledge is incredible so Phil decides to rack his brain on growing avocados.

The most important thing is varietal selection and Peter recommends one of the dwarf cultivars, the self pollinating Rincon, wurtz or pinkerton. They don’t have a very deep root system therefore when the soil becomes saturated with water the root system is nice and shallow and there is also less chance of root disease.

Phil asks what you can do if you get root rot in your trees?

In the past it has been a major problem in growing avocados successfully but there is a new product now called anti-rot which really works well.

Another good trick is to actually plant the tree into a pot. Put it on the patio or plant it in the garden up to 15cm deep and this ensure that the plant is very well drained and you will still get plenty of fruit.

When it comes to feeding them Peter recommends you use a combination of citrus food and dynamic lifter but the whole secret is gypsum. It works a treat; just one square handful per metre right after harvest is fantastic.

Peter knows so much about growing all types of fruit and the good news is that you can catch up with Perter and his team from Birdwood Nursery at this year’s Queensland Home Garden Expo in Nambour.

This is one event you don’t want to miss and this year it is bigger and better. 3 days of absolute gardening indulgence where you will see all the latest plants, products, and gardening trends.
