What to Do

Episode: # 12 30/06/07
Presenter: Sue McDougall

Just because its winter, that doesn’t mean you have to hibernate inside. Sue recommends finding a warm, sunny spot in the garden and getting stuck into something that is going to take your mind off the cold weather.

Many Garden Club members have got themselves down to Dawson’s Garden World in Joondalup to get some of their garden questions answered.

Christina has brought in a vase plant that has finished flowering and is wondering what to do with it know. It will start to die back and there is nothing you can do but be assured that it will send out beautiful new shoots. Once they are at a good size they can be replanted and then discard the rest of the plant.

Ants in Clivia’s are a common problem. All you can do is re-pot because the plants excavate all the soil around the roots and you can start to get dieback on the plant. One of the keys to avoiding ants is to lift the pot up off the ground.

Another member has a privet plant that has leaves that are turning black. Sue thinks that at this time of year it could be quite common because of the weather but they also need more fertiliser. Now is the time to start liquid fertilising to get that really lush growth and also check around the roots to make sure that water is soaking properly into the soil.

One member has brought in a sad looking yucca that looks as though it has been sunburned. The best thing is to move it from the sunny spot, remove all the damaged leaves and encourage it to branch out. It will be a much happier yucca.

Many garden club members want some ideas on winter colour. Sue thinks that azaleas are fantastic and perfect for terracotta pots. Dawson’s Garden World have over 30 different varieties to choose from.

Some of the best performers include White Mrs Kint (Rhododendron, Hybrid Cultivar, Indica ‘White Mrs Kint’) with large single white flowers. If you are after some bright colour then choose Orange Delight (Rhododendron, Hybrid Cultivar, Indica, ‘Orange Delight’) and if full, fluffy flowers are more your thing then Pink Ruffles Rhododendron, Hybrid Cultivar, Indica, ‘Pink Ruffles’) is the one for you.

With so much choice it is easy to become confused so call into any of the Dawson’s Garden World stores and pick up their free catalogue. There are descriptions on every single variety they have in store.

There is a special on too; buy five pots of any size and you will only pay for four!
