What to Do

Episode: # 12 30/06/07
Presenter: Nigel Ruck

Grevilleas really are a sensational plant genus, many having a long flowering period including right through the winter months, which is one reason why they are good to have around now. Those of you with one or more flowering away in your garden will know what we are talking about.

They are literally thousands of different Grevilleas with a wide range of flower colours and forms, plenty of foliage variation, and all shapes and sizes. Sprawling Grevilleas are of course native, pretty hardy too, tolerating various different conditions and soil types providing the drainage is at least moderate.

As a general rule, a sunny position will produce the best flowering, but plenty of Grevilleas will do well in a part sun part shade situation, still doing their magic.

Nigel’s favourite is Grevillea Honey Gem (Grevillea, Hybrid Cultivar, ‘Honey Gem’). It is one of the larger grevilleas and gets up to about 3 to 5 metres tall with stunning golden flowers throughout the year.

One of the best known and popular Grevilleas would have to be Robyn Gordon (Grevillea, Hybrid Cultivar, ‘Robyn Gordon’) a small shrub growing to 1-1.5m tall and 1.5-2m wide, with red flowers all year round, now not many plants can match that! Like a lot of Grevilleas, honey eating birds find the nectar in the flowers irresistible, which is why they are excellent for bird attracting gardens.

The best advice Nigel can give you is to get down to your local nursery or better still one that specialises in grevilleas where you should easily be able to find something that works for you!
