Yates Stories – Brilliant Potted Colour

There is nothing like brilliant potted colour to warm you up and entice you outdoors. Trends and colours are as hot as annual flowers as they are on the catwalk. Annuals are a great outdoor accessory to dress up pots and entertaining areas.

When you are designing your potted outdoor display try using some of the plants that enjoy similar growing conditions. Put your sun lovers with your sun lovers and your shade lovers with shade lovers.

You can plant single colours or alternatively mix and match different shades. Melissa’s pick includes blue cinerarias for the centre, lavender pansies and some petite orange violas.

Tips to keep your potted displays looking great:
A pot is not a natural environment for a lot of plants, so unlike plants in the garden they can’t send their roots far and wide in search of water and nutrients that means the pot has to provide everything the plant needs.

The first secret is a quality potting mix like Yates Thrive Premium Potting Mix, which is free draining and contains the right stuff to get your pots off to a great start. It has a slow release fertiliser in the mix as well as a wetting agent to ensure the water you are applying can soak deep into the root system.

If your potting mix doesn’t contain them make sure you mix in some Hortico Water Storage Granuals. These are little crystals store up to a 100 times their own weight so the plants can draw on the moisture when they need it.

For something a little bit more subdued and sophisticated, cyclamen are a great choice for this time of year. They produce the most elegant flowers and come in all shades that are very beautiful looking. The perfect compliment are dainty little white violas.

The final secret to a great looking display is to feed it with Yates Thrive Concentrate Flower and Fruit. Water in every few weeks to keep the flowers coming and don’t forget to deadhead any faded flowers to prolong your display.
