Day 6 - Glin Castle
Day 6 - 2nd June 2006
Glin Castle
Glin Castle stands on the banks of the River Shannon admist 500 acre demesne. Visitors can stay between March and November and other times by special arrangement. The castle gardens provide an environment in which visiting gardeners can investigate and examine the flowers, plants and trees. The walled garden has fresh fruit and vegetables for the kitchen and there are opportunities for walking, croquet and tennis.
The entrance to Glin has a dramatic feature of Wild Rhubarb (Gunnera tinctoria). The leaves grow up to 2 metres across and 2-4 metres in height, this will give you an immediate clue that these plants need constant water so it makes the perfect bog garden plant and is a dramatic feature that will always draw attention. Neville rates Gunnera as one of those triple ‘a’ weirdo plants with its spiny stems and the leaves have a real raspy touch to them. One last hint….don’t try to eat it as it is not one of those sorts of Rhubarb.
